Marble pavement
Two weeks ago I walked up to a marble mine abandoned in 1914 when the workers left to fight in the First World War. There are still blocks up there cut and ready for transportation but the fact is that the mine was never reopened. The returning soldiers were small in number and there was insufficient manpower to reopen. There are many pavements and squares made of this distinctive stone which, incidentally, is quite slippy underfoot if wet. It is cool and cloudy this afternoon so the France v Italy rugby match beckons!
