Lines from Arachnacama Luminosa larvae

These sticky lines are produced by the larvae of the Arachocampa Luminosa (glowworm). The lines trap insects and are drawn up and devoured. It is during this larval stage that the larva glow to attract food in the form of flying insects. The Waitomo caves have the special habitat required by the glowworm - the right humidity, a sheltered surface to hang from and suspend its sticky lines, a calm atmosphere to prevent the lines from tangling and a plentiful supply of insects brought into the caves via the river.
