The Lighthouse at Farewell Spit -
- and an historic lighthouse it is. All the manned lighthouses in NZ have gradually been automated over the years after having had families living and working there for decades. This lighthouse was the last to become automatic with the keepers shifting out in 1984.
Farewell Spit Eco Tours are the only people allowed to drive out onto the 35km long Spit - and a fascinating drive it is too. I'm so pleased we did it. We're on our way to Whanganui Inlet this afternoon.
