Nursery rhymes are weird

I'm sure I'm not the first person to make this startling revelation but nursery rhymes are weird. From the top of my head the rhymes we sing to young children include topics such as the plague, babies falling out of trees, small exploding mammals, a boy rolling down a hill and cracking his skull and a collapsing bridge. Who thinks these things up?
