Perfect Storm

A very rough night with more storms to come.

Started the day with training in Dorchester and saw a lorry on its side on the way home on the A35.

Today has been a lesson in always taking my camera with me. A chance to pop down to West Bay on my way home with just an iPhone was very frustrating. Quick call into home to get changed into warmer gear and grab the camera, then an afternoon of walking around Charmouth and Lyme Regis seafronts to see the damage.

The tide last night and this morning was one of the highest in a long time, due to the storm and a lot of damage has been done. In Charmouth we have broken beach huts, huts that have been moved in land by the force of the tide, half the beach up on the car-park, land from the car-park which has been washed away, broken footbridges and flooded land.

In Lyme, the shingle beach has been washed up onto the Cart Road, and the pebble beach has been washed up and around The Cobb into The Harbour. A 2 tonne canon has been washed off the North Wall. North Wall also has a large crack in it which was filled only recently to repair it, but the cement has now been washed back out?

It will take weeks to clear up, but with worse forecast for this weekend, efforts to move anything seem pretty pointless.

We'll be battening down the hatches for Saturday night.

The fishermen know that the sea is dangerous and the storm terrible, but they have never found these dangers sufficient reason for remaining ashore.
