Long, cold, wet exposure
I hadn't had a crack at long night shots since I was in Brighton with Rob 2 years ago (2 years! How can it be two years?!) and as this bridge is just round the corner from me I had already thought about it as a potential location. So, since I was going that way to drop off LK I thought I'd have a look.
I have learned a few things.
Find somewhere without streetlights. Whilst seeing the surroundings is interesting, sodium streetlights wash out the red taillights.
Find somewhere with traffic! I really didn't think this road would be so quiet. 90sec shot after 90sec shot ended with loads of white headlights and very few red trails.
Look behind you. This was one of the last shots of the night and I had switched to bulb mode. I was just about to finish it when I realised there was a huge truck approaching from behind covered in lights, including some red ones on top, which caused a nice, separate trail.
Bring a strap or cord to tie camera and tripod to the bridge. I felt like the whole thing was -this- close to blowing over the side.
