Waltham Abbey

Had a lovely relaxed day with our friends Al and Liz in Waltham Abbey today. Coffee and biscuits on arrival, followed by soup and cheese for lunch, a brief stroll to the Abbey and town before custard tarts and a little later a gargantum curry dinner. Wow!

The Abbey, of course, is supposed to be where King Harold is buried and their is a tomb there there which is supposed to be his. The Abbey and it's environment is very interesting and has been well preserved. The market, which I suspect has been held for hundreds of years on the same spot, was just closing down when we turned up. But we were able to buy a few bits of fruit and veg including a large celeriac and some blood oranges.

Waltham Abbey has made an effort with its town centre, bricking the pedestrian streets but the centre is much like the vast majority of other town centres around the country - suffering from the impact of out of town shopping centres. There were lots of empty shops and it seems shops come and go. We wanted to see the museum but that was closed for refurbishment until 2015.
