Fuel for the present generation
A back blip from my work. I just liked the shape and the light at the end coming through.
This is the end view of a fuel element for our Advanced Gas Cooled Reactors.
It has graphite shield containing 36 hollow pins each filled with 64 Uranium pellets. Each pellet is about the size of a finger-end and produces the same amount of heat as between 1 and 2 tons of coal.
8 of these elements are connected to form a Stringer and the reactor has 332 channels in which the stringers are housed.
Each reactor generates about 650MW of power - enough for about 1 million homes.
Maybe you see why I'm so fascinated with my job?
