Young Eland cow calf

This young Eland calf was found abandoned in the shrubs on a game farm. Despite its weak state, it was decided to leave it should the mother return . .

Hours later, it was evident that the mother was not coming back to her calf, and the few- days- old animal was loaded onto the back of a bakkie.
It was clear that it had not nursed recently and was given fresh cow's milk from a wine bottle. It was eagerly accepted, and the calf spent the night in the enclosed space of the bakkie.

Early today it was given more milk (fortunately it was well accepted by the calf), and by this morning she was already looking much more lively and better. Since her benefactors had to leave for home and could not look after her, she was taken to an adjacent farm where she will be taken care of.

Thanks to Blanche for supplying this image.

Just for the record: The eland is the largest antelope in Africa.
