camera and canoe

Here is my Grandson Ricky ( Blip name Photojournalism) in a Cedar Canadian Canoe on the Grovetown Lagoons near Blenheim.

While Ricky was passenger in Canoe, hunting for birds with his camera, I went for a short walk, and found an interesting plant, It had a spiky ball like feature, does anyone have an idea on what it could be?
