Welcome to My World
I don't want to use too broad of a brush to paint this corner of Oregon, but this seems to be a common sentiment here. There are some great people here, but I struggle with the intolerance from many, and thus the conundrum Tom and I feel about moving this way. If many knew that the radio I listen to is either tuned to NPR or the Grateful Dead station, I'd be escorted to the Lane County border. As I'm typing this, Pandora dialed up The Grateful Dead's "Touch of Grey": We will get by, we will survive.
So in the one way I know to cast some light into the darkness, I gave the girls tonight, as I always end practice, a quote on a small piece of paper. Tonight's was from Pete Seeger, and it simply said, "Participation…that's what's gonna save the human race." I told them to believe in something greater than themselves, to involve themselves in their school, in their community, in the world they wanted to see. I didn't have a banjo, but I think Pete would have approved of the message.
