'Sheep'
This song is for CameraColin sheep by Pink Floyd.
We went out to get some bread and dinner and the sky looked very dramatic so we headed up the Eathie Road to where I was hoping that the light was shining on a barn that I would like to blip. On the way the sun was catching these farm buildings and lucky for us there was a place to pull in so out I jumped and managed to capture this image before the sun disappeared.
The sheep were rather curious and headed over to say hello. I need help again ! I think they could be Scottish Black faced sheep or they could be rough fell sheep either would cope with the weather we have here. I never knew there were so many breeds of sheep until I googled them ! There's three breeds of Black Faced sheep alone, Perth, Lanark and Northumberland. Whatever they are they looked healthy and fine examples of their breed. It does sound like they all emerged from the same 'genetic umbrella' but the true origin has been lost in time.
In the 12th century records show that Monks kept dun or blackface sheep using the wool for their clothes and exporting large amounts to Europe.
The breed of Blackface sheep were introduced to North Scotland in the early 19th Century and it seems strange to think that highlanders were turned out of their homes to make room for the sheep and that it was nt long before the Blackfaces were cleared of the hills to make room for the Cheviots whose fleece sold at a higher price .
By 1860 it was realised that Blackfaces were a much better breed to with stand the harsh weather and terrain .
We used to go and watch the sheep sale in the fields near my parents house in Kent. I have some black and white negatives somewhere of the different sheep and characters there that I must find and print before it's no longer possible.
Weathers been alright, the black clouds just blew over. The wind has changed direction so we could be in for some cold weather.
