InverMallie Bothy

Another walk suggestion was greeted with approval from Mrs Cakes; this despite some really foul spells during our wee walk. We went along the south side of Loch Arkaig to the InverMallie Bothy. (Just think how nice it would be on a good day then)
I was surprised at the location choice for what must originally have been a shepherd or game keeper’s cottage. A sizeable river flows out of the valley to the south and the building sits on a very flat flood plain of what looks like a fluvial delta on the map. On the final kilometre approach the track plunges repeatedly in to deep meandering burns and in several places we had to hunt upstream a bit to get across narrower sections but really there was pockets of water and lagoons everywhere.
The MBA (Mountain Bothy Association) have seen fit to suggest to visitors to sleep upstairs as there has been several inches of water within the ground floor. Standing a short distance from the house looking over at the raging river there was a perception that the water surface was higher than your feet.
Quite often a single image cannot sum up the walk easily so (and it is the first time I have ever said this) you can see some more on flickr here:
