Chicago seen from John Hancock Observatory
This observatory is a thousand feet up the John Hancock Building, currently the fourth tallest of Chicago's skyscrapers. This view is that looking south to the city center and beyond.
The three buildings which jut above the horizon line in this photo are, from left to right:
- Aeon Centre (Chicago's third tallest)
- Trump Tower (second tallest)
- Willis Tower (tallest)
The wide avenue below is N Michigan (this part of it is nicknamed Magnificent Mile or Mag Mile). The kink in the road is a the bridge across the Chicago river.
Just to this side of the bridge is the site of Fort Dearborn. The fort was built in 1803, and a settlement quickly grew outside it. In 1837, with a population which had risen to almost four thousand, the city of Chicago was incorporated.
The slight curvature of the horizon could be a photographic artifact.
The colour cast in the photo is attributable to the dark colouring of the window glass; there is no outdoor viewing platform at this height!
