Saguaro
The flower on the Saguaro cacti is the Arizona state flower. Some saguaro can live up to 150 years and can grow between 40-60 feet with a girth up to 10 feet. This cactus grows in southwestern US down into Mexico. There are many different species of birds that utilize the cactus as a form of shelter and source of food. The cacti produces fruit as well ruby red in color. The Tohono O’odham tribes celebrate the beginning of their summer growing season with a ceremony using a fermented drink made from the bright red fruit to summon rains, vital for the crops. The cactus is protected by law within the state of Arizona for example when houses or highways are built special permits are required to move or destroy the cactus.
