Wrought iron

This is the pedestrian route over the Tyne using the High Level Bridge. Opened in 1849 and designed by Robert Stephenson it was the first road and rail bridge in the world. The railway is above the road.

Today only buses and pedestrians can use it.

The top bits are wrought iron. The railway sits on the arches but, worryingly, the roadway is suspended from wrought iron rods. The bridge was closed between 2005 and 2009 as cracks were discovered in some of the girders. It's all fixed now and is a great way to cross the Tyne.
