Chicago: Navy Pier on Lake Michigan
Originally called "Municipal Pier #2", its name was soon changed to "Navy Pier" because of its use by the US Navy during World War I. Today it provides a multitude of attractions, including trips on Lake Michigan.
Among the cluster of skyscrapers in the background is Chicago's second tallest building: the Trump Tower, a condo-hotel completed in 2009. It is the elegant building with a single white antenna at center right of the photo.
In 2001 Donald Trump, not a man known for his modesty, announced that it was to be the tallest building in the world. The trauma of 9/11 (and the idea that skyscrapers could be easy targets) led to its being redesigned, consequently it is lower than Chicago's Willis Tower.
In case you were wondering, Municipal Pier #1 was never built.
