How many meters of halyard do we need?

This isn't the most attractive photo, but it was a demo of mathematics meeting practicality through photography.
By knowing my height and where I came up to on our noticeboard, I was able to impress my vicar by telling him how much halyard (rope) we need for our flag pole.
Rounded, the flag pole was 7.5m.
