Oranges and Lemons
My second day at the Royal Courts of Justice volunteering for the PSU. A very busy day, with a short break at 2pm. After a quick sandwich and coffee, went into St Clement Danes. I must have passed it thousands of times, but had never been inside. Here it is.
A short history. According to legend, the first church on the site was built in the 9th century by the Danes after they colonized the village of Aldwych. The church was first rebuilt by William the Conqueror. It was demolished, and again rebuilt by Wren, the steeple being added in 1719. It was bombed in the London Blitz, but the outer walls, the tower and steeple survived. It was restored and re-consecrated in 1958 to become the Central Church of the Royal Air Force. William Webb Ellis (of rugby fame) was once rector of the church.
