Cruel or helpful?

I have been participating in a "lab animals course" for 4 days, still 3 days to go. These are albino mice, given to us in order fpr us to implement our practical skills. Unfortunately, these animals were used in previous tests and therefore will be euthanized after our use. I can't keep myself from thinking:"is this really the best ethical way to be helpful to the world"?
