Early morning along the river...

Every winter several small, rather dilapidated houseboats moor on the banks of the River Nene just upstream from Peterborough city centre. These are occupied by rough-hewn men, who can sometimes be seen along the banks, chopping wood for their wood-burning stoves, whose smoke wreathes romantically into the crisp frosty air. It seems in perfect harmony with the wraith-like swirls of mist emanating from the river.

The flood water has now dropped, although stretches of the river bank are still treacherous with slimy mud. It was good to get back to my local patch - I hope that the water level stays low so that I can visit regularly and watch the gradual progress of spring.

PS Better viewed large, to appreciate the full misty splendour!!
