I do strange things during pauses in the exam period. These actions tend to end in procrastination and annoy my neighbours or dormmates, so you are warned.
My next exam coming up is 'Spanish language proficiency' so I thought: 'Why not make some castanets to spread some rhythm in the house'.
This was the result. It is actually very easy and fun to make them.
The origins of the instrument are not known but the practice of clicking hand-held sticks together to accompany dancing is ancient, and was both practised by both Greeks and Egyptians.
Contrary to popular belief, castanets are not commonly used in the flamenco dance. In fact, the Spanish folk dance "Sevillianas" is the style typically performed using castanets.
The name (Spanish: castañuelas) is derived from the diminutive form of castaña, the Spanish word for chestnut, which they resemble.
