Town too tough to die
Tombstone, Arizona, was the site of the, "Gunfight at the OK Corral", where John Henry “Doc” Holliday (gambler, gunfighter and dentist), and the Earp brothers (famous lawmen); Virgil, Wyatt, and Morgan fought the outlaw gang "The Cowboys". Tombstone was one of the last frontier boomtowns in the old west. The town of Tombstone produced between $40-80 million USD in silver bullion. This is one of the highest silver producing areas in Arizona which would account for the population boom that went from 100's to over 14,000's in less than seven years. The town nearly became a ghost town only being saved due to the fact that it was the Cochise county seat until 1929. In 1910 the population had dwindled down to about 600 but in 2010 Tombstones population was up to about 1400. Tourism is the major industry people being drawn to the site of the famous gunfight at the OK Corral.
Most of the buildings are original or salvaged as Tombstone has burned several times however the original Bird Cage Theater stands. Some of the original bars still stand such as the Crystal Palace and Big Nose Kate’s Saloon where you can get a cold beer or something stronger if you wish. If you should find yourself in the area the trip is worth it if only to walk where the legends of the old west lived, loved, fought, and died.
