Wardlaw

On Saturday, when I visited Caerlaverock, I promised myself a return visit to walk up Wardlaw, a small hill to the north of the castle. This was the site of an Iron Age fort, and also a Roman camp, although this is no longer visible from the ground.

The path up to Wardlaw follows a green road through farmland. The top of the hill is covered in trees and the remains of defensive ditches are clearly visible. There is a glorious view across the Solway towards the Lake District hills, and Criffel (seen here behind the trees on my way down).

I didn't see anyone else on my walk, but from the top I could hear two men who were fixing a drystone dyke and turning the air blue with their language. I don't think they knew I was there...
