Robert Gordon

Robert Gordon's College and University lies through this gate, though in reality the University has moved to a site near the Dee. Slightly confusingly the statue in front of the building is not Robert Gordon, but rather General Charles Gordon, of Khartoum fame.

When I was a small child General Gordon was a great hero, when I was a little older his reputation was a little more hazy, not so much a hero, but maybe somebody who put himself and others intentionally at risk, fatally as it turned out.

The school was founded by Robert Gordon in 1750, the building beyond the gate was designed byWilliam Adam and completed in 1732. It was occupied by troops after the Jacobite rebellion.

Robert Gordon intended his school to cater for the education of boys whose parents were "poor and destitute". It now caters for both boys and girls, and whose parents are neither poor nor destitute.
