Pelorus River - of "The Hobbit " Fame
Well, here we are happily getting settled into the caravan at Kaiteriteri Beach Camp in the Nelson province. The “we” at present is daughter Margaret, grand-daughter Emily (10) and I. Keith will come over here from time to time and lots of other extended family and friends will also appear. Some will just be visiting for the day and others will be staying with us.
Margaret left Blenheim at 10.am this morning and was here before I arrived. She and Emily did the preliminary setting up of the gear she brought over in her car. I did not get away from home until mid-afternoon. The weather has been dull and cloudy all day and heavy rain is predicted tomorrow. Hopefully we will not get the heavy falls here that are said to fall in Marlborough. From all reports so far the weather here in Kaiteriteri over the last few weeks has left much to be desired for campers!
I stopped at the café at Pelorus Bridge on the way here. There I bought vegetable frittata and coffee to go. I also walked out along the old bridge high above the waters of the Pelorus River. A number of folk were looking down at the water where folk were jumping off the rocks into the deep water and enjoying a swim despite the dull cooler day. I happened to meet some older mountain bikers returning to Wellington after a few days mountain biking in the Nelson area. One was Steve, Margaret’s partner. He had enjoyed his biking adventures here. Steve will be coming back from Wellington to camp with us next weekend.
The Pelorus River in the vicinity of the bridge has been made famous in recent times by Sir Peter Jackson of “The Hobbit” films fame. Quite a bit of filming was carried out in the river nearby. As you can see from today’s image it is a very attractive area and well suited to Middle Earth activities.
The white spot in the left-hand bottom corner is where a young man had just jumped into the water from a great height. Brrrr…..
