Cans and pans...

... after Andy Warhol and William S. Burroughs

I went to the Photographers' Gallery yesterday, primarily to look at David Lynch's pictures of factories. Impressive they are, looming black and white spaces that first appear unused and unoccupied until you see plumes of steam and smoke appearing from roofs and chimneys. Looking at them I was transported back to my first viewing of Eraserhead in the Student Union Bar at Bristol Poly.

Having not read the press release correctly I didn't realise that American Author Burroughs and Warhol were in the same show.

Burroughs had some interesting ideas, for example letting the camera follow his natural gaze when witnessing a road crash. Other ideas such as producing collages of hundreds of other photographs, then rephotographing just gave me a headache. If he's laid off the heroin, they might have been better.

Domestic still life captured in North Africa, did however appeal as a document of life. A cup of English tea for example, in his kitchen.

Warhol we all know intimately, however the black and white photographs seen here revealed more about his graphic designers eye and obsession with packaging. Snaps of supermarket shelves and colliding typography.

Being Saturday the gallery was packed with people yesterday. I will definitely go back again on a quieter day.
