Putting the Spire onto the New Coventry Cathedral
This painting by Terence Cuneo depicts the lowering by helicopter of the spire onto Sir Basil Spence's new Coventry Cathedral. In front of the new Cathedral is are the remains of the old medieval Cathedral, burnt our in the blitz of 1940.
This painting is in the Royal Academy of Engineering, Prince Philip House in Carlton House Terrace in London.
The spire was lowered by helicopter by Wing Commander John Dowling.
The combination of the new cathedral, its modernist art, the helicopter and indeed the artist all come together to represent the "white hot heat of the technological revolution" of the 1960s.
