The Scottish lion features on the reverse side of some £1 coins. Apparently it originates from the twelfth century and it features in the Great Seal of Scotland. Originally belonging to the monarch alone, any other attempt to use the emblem met with heavy punishment. More recently, however, a Royal Warrant was issued to allow it to be displayed as a token of loyalty to the crown.

Does that mean that one of the most Scottish of nationalist symbols is effectively a pledge of allegiance to the British royal family?

I don't hold with nationalism in any form - but find it interestingly ironic if this is true...
