The Coriovallum villa

The striking corner building on the Kruisstraat /Valkenburgerweg in Heerlen. Popularly known as "the Coriovallum Villa".

Radha was the architect of the villa. When building in 1921 of the villa are plenty of Roman objects found. On the side of the property provided the Valkenburgerweg architect Rijn therefore by a representation of the snake and staff of Hypocrates, the symbol of medicine. The same way a side on the Kruisstraat oil lamp a reference to a Roman find on that spot.

The famous southern city Heerlen's GP August Widdershoven (1885-1955) left the villa build and lived there with his large family of fourteen children and his wife. The doctor was very involved in the Red Cross and the creation of the FIRST AID in Heerlen.

At the end of the first World War when there was a flu epidemic broke out, he founded an emergency hospital because the Hospital of Heerlen was already full with patients. He led the southern city Heerlen's School doctors service and had itself a busy practice as a general practitioner. As a sportsman he has partly own ensured that Heerlen got pool for sport swimming. He opened the pool in 1935 by diving into the water.

After all children had left the House, the villa was an office building. In 1985 the building was converted into an apartment building.
