#megsmiles
Today I ran 12 miles in memory of Meg Cross Menzies. My thoughts go out to her family.
I didn't know Meg, but she could have been any one of us in any city in the world. She was an American runner, killed by a drunk driver when out for her early morning run on 13 January 2014.
Runners are a community, one that transcends geographical borders. Over 78,000 runners across the world pledged their support on Facebook and ran/will run for Meg today.
Edinburgh is a pretty safe place and Scotland has an active travel plan. This plan details measures for walkers and cyclists to make the roads safer. Despite runners being a major growing demographic, they are not included - instead they are lumped together with walkers. Any runner will know that we have very different needs. We often get abuse from walkers, cyclists and cars, and are often forced onto the road to run. More could and should be done.
Anyway, today I ran for Meg, I ran for all the people who for whatever reason couldn't run today, and I ran for me; because there will come a day when I can no longer run. Thankfully today was not that day.
Today's run: 12 miles
January running mileage: 46 miles
Ps apologies for the photo - it was the only one I took and I clearly didn't look at it before running again; I could have sworn my eyes were open!
