On the way to post out invites I passed this. Top news of the day - I only had to buy twelve stamps. I had suitable stamps floating about to post even the ones going abroad! Postage today seems very expensive though I suspect that if you make a comparison between wages today and in 1840 the penny post was actually far more costly.

But I read somewhere that in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century you could post a letter on one side of London and it would bew delivered the same day to the other side. And I can remember there being a morning and afternoon delivery
