The Herries Chronicle

I have been tidying up the book shelves today with a view to getting rid of a number of paperbacks, although I find it difficult sometimes to throw books away. In the course of my clear out I came across these copies of the Herries Chronicle by Hugh Walpole. I remember reading these about 25 years ago when we had not long started to visit the Lake District on a regular basis. I recall the story being fairly exciting and dramatic although as it progressed --it covers a huge time span- it became less so. What I think attracted me more was the Lake District setting as we were often walking in places where the action of the novels was taking place and Walpole's descriptions are very accurate. There is still a house at Watendlath which claims to be the "House of Judith Paris, the heroine of the second book.
The Herries Chronicle was written in the 1930s and took about 6 years to complete
