Life List item #23: See a Mayan pyramid

Took the ferry to the mainland today, rented a car and went to visit Chichén Itzá. It was unbelievable hot...and it is winter. Why would a civilisation choose to live here?

Chichén Itzá is kind of in the middle of nowhere - but that didn't stop thousands of aggressive vendors jumping out in front of the car on the way there, or harassing everyone in the ruins to buy some cheap crap - kind of takes something out of the experience.

That aside, some of the more quiet corners where very cool. We also visited Tulum on the way back - a much smaller and quieter place right on the shore. It became a major Mayan city after Chichén Itzá fell. We actually liked visiting there more.
