Spirit Of Carnival
We met our daughter Kate in Bridgwater today to do a bit of shopping and some DIY in her flat. Had lunch in a pub in town, opposite this statue which celebrates the town as the birthplace of the Somerset Carnival season, which originated with a Bonfire Night torchlit parade and has developed into the month long circuit of carnival processions around the County each November, with the enormous illuminated floats Carnival Clubs spend all year raising funds for, building and rehearsing.
The statue of Guy Fawkes shows him holding a traditional torch, or squib.
Talking of squibs of the damp variety, today has been an unrelentingly grey, cold and damp day.
