Bald Eagle

Tradition has it that Plegmund was hermit monk who lived in this wild part of Cheshire before he was plucked by King Alfred and taken to court with a view to improving scholarship.

He obviously made quite an impression and later became Archbishop of Canterbury.

Just up the lane from the well is St Peter's church Plemstell which stands on a slightly elevated, but very isolated, position which was known as the Isle of Chester. The land around it would have at one time all have been marsh land. The story goes that an Irish fisherman was saved by landing on it and built a church dedicated to St Peter the patron saint of fishermen. The present church is much later and the wooden tower was replaced with a stone one built in 1824. It is said that the stone mason responsible for building the tower was said to have spent all the money that he earned from the project on drink.

It was a grey, cold and flat day for a walk. We hadn't done this walk before and it turned out to be quite interesting. NM got some ideas that she might be able to use when the new syllabus comes in next year.
