A glimpse of my day

William Stanlake VC

This morning we took Alis sisters dog Molly for a walk in Camberwell Old Cemetry and came across this this gravestone. Private Stanlake was awarded the Victoria Cross in 1854 when employed as a sharpshooter, volunteered to reconnoitre, and although warned of the dangers he would encounter, crawled to within six yards of a Russian sentry and brought back such information that the officer in charge of the party was able to make a surprise attack. A brave man indeed.
