Nature island

The Park Schinkeleilanden was built from 2005 to 2010 and in 2011 it received the national Green City Award. The park is used for sports as well as general recreation. It is made up of a series of four islands that each have a unique purpose, including a tennis island, a football (soccer) island, a park island for general recreation and picnicking, and a nature island for birds, bugs and fungi.

This view is of the nature island. The poles are safe lookouts for the birds that are abundant in the park. This photo from New Year's Eve is of the recreation island, and this photo from December 2nd is the view across the canal from the dock on the recreation island.

Recreational cycling and walking paths run through the large park all the way to the Amsterdam Forest. Perfect for road bikes! The "official" route begins in Vondelpark and through our neighbourhood before reaching this park. I hope to scout it out soon on my new omafiet.
