The BBC website says that this is a Sperm Whale. I don't know much about whales but I suppose it is probably quite a young one.

It was floating on its side when I saw it, it looked like it had been cut by a boats propeller, but since whales tend to stay away from moving propellers I suspect that happened after it died.

The poor thing had gathered a little crowd of watchers, and I have no doubt that the gulls and other scavengers will be next on the scene.

Edinburgh was built on Sperm oil.
