TRAMWAY

Scarborough is well known for being the first seaside resort in the UK. To assist pedestrians in moving around the steep hills in the town, a series of cliff lifts were constructed.

Welcome to the Central Tramway, established in 1881, and the oldest surviving tramway company in the country.

The lift is closed between November and February each year for maintenance. Running between the town centre on Marine Parade and the beach on Foreshore Road in the South Bay, the cost to travel on the Tramway last year was 75p each way.

Over time there have been five cliff tramways in Scarborough. Sadly three have closed – the North Cliff Lift, Spa Lift and the Queen's Parade Cliff Lift.

Only two existing lifts remain - The Central Tramway – above - and the South Cliff Lift, which links the South Cliff Esplanade with the South Sands. When it opened in 1873 it was the first funicular railway in the UK.
