Bagan

Bagan is the main tourist destination of Myanmar - a huge site with over 2,200 temples and monasteries from the 11th to 13th centuries. It was the capital of the first kingdom that united what is now Myanmar. The kings fought many wars to bring the country together. As good Buddhists, they had to build temples and stupas to gain merit to offset breaking the Buddhist command not to kill. Lots of killing = lots of temples!
