Dutch par excellence

In the Middle Ages the first real skates were invented in the Netherlands: a wooden plate with a piece of metal and straps to tie them under your shoes. It became part of our culture and was a big happening in winter. Since the war between Spain and the Netherlands (1568-1648) the Dutch have been (in)famous on skates.

Most romantic is – of course – to skate outdoors on lakes, ponds and canals, but since we lack rigorous winters more and more, we’re doing it indoors, e.g. on this skating rink in Assen.
