Diving with Yumi

The manager of the Dive Center at Hudhuran Fushi is a Japanese woman we are very fond of, named Yumi. We met her at the resort last year and stayed in touch via email - so we were really looking forward to seeing her again on this visit.

Yumi took my youngest son under her wing and gave him private scuba lessons so he could earn his diving license. The two of them bonded well, as my son is fascinated by Japan and Yumi has enormous patience and good humor. At times my son was very nervous, but she kept working with him until he perfected all the necessary skills. She also easily scooped up puffer fish and sea cucumbers for him to hold and pet under water.

At the end of the trip, my son presented Yumi with some origami he made for her and she stood on the pier and cried as our boat left.
