Red sky at morning, sailor's warning;
Red sky at night, sailors' delight.

For centuries, before modern scientific weather forecasts, different types of clouds have been used for accurately predicting the weather.
And so it was that this frosty morning's beautiful dawn sky gave warning that the approaching wind and rain would soon arrive so we quickly drove home northwards to beat it.
