The Bull's Head
I don't drink, but I do still like going to pubs (particularly old ones with character and individuality) for lunch or the occasional dinner. I also love old pub signs. This one is for The Bull's Head in Meriden and I like how it has been 'cut out' rather than simply painted on to a flat board. Pub signs have been with us since Roman times and often were in pictorial form as the majority of the population was unable to read. Pub signs can often give you information about the history of a place or can contain a riddle or rebus. They are always worth investigating.
The Bull's Head in Meriden is a 17th Century coaching inn which retains many original features and, not surprisingly because of its age, it is said to be haunted by a phantom coach arriving on the old cobblestones which have long since disappeared and a coachman who hanged himself on the premises centuries ago.
