ode to the salt...
...cellar
where salt used - to be put into these tiny vessels - kept at individual place settings - back in the day - if you were on the wealthy side - they tended to be more ornate - if you were lacking - families typically had one main large master salt - which was passed around the table - salt was a seasoning that could come at a premium - not always to be counted on - it was sold in blocks - chunks - would need to be broken apart - and so the fine granules would then be placed into a variety of salt cellars - i became fascinated with these - their history - the story they tell - about 7 years or so years ago - began to collect them - now have a good 100 or so to my name - from all walks of life - some are rather elaborate - some are very simple - they all tell a story - which is the attraction to me -
this one shown here - belonged to my great aunt vy - it originated in austria - handpainted in this green leaf pattern - made of fine bone china - it dates to the early 1900's - because my mother gave it to me - i don't know its own story - yet it's special due to the family connection - regardless of how my aunt came to possess it - and that's enough to make for...
a
happy day.....
