Caught my attention

Another lovely day with my friend Ros today. The weather in Margaret River has been mild for this time of year and it was pleasant enough to go for a walk in the midday sun. We walked to the bottom of the block and then through the nearby forest retreat and joined on to the bush path that meanders along the banks of the Margaret River to the bridge and entrance to the town. We continued over the bridge and visited the rain garden area that has been created to clean the nutrients, pollutants and sediments from the town's storm water before it enters the river. The local Shire has done a really great job...not only is it functional and educational but it is also really nicely landscaped to encourage people to spend some time wandering through.

Enough on that...After visiting this area we crossed the highway to Rotary Park on the banks of the river and continued our walk into the national park. That is where we came across this 'shelter' – adjacent to the path it caught our attention and had us intrigued as to who built it. It wouldn't have provided anyone with shelter from the rain, but perhaps offered some shelter from the sun, although the area is quite heavily forested and so plenty of shade available. Maybe some local children built it as a cubby house ...that is probably the most likely scenario. It was well constructed with some of the joints being tied together with rope. Inside there was a mattress..but no sign that anyone has been in there recently. The maiden hair fern was growing in amongst the logs indicating that it has been in situ for sometime. It was long enough to take an adult laying down, but it was quite low so I suspect children made it. Anyway...it is pretty cool and if I was a little smaller and more agile I would have loved to have gone inside and immersed myself in the memories of the adventures of being young. (I hope the Ranger doesn't remove it)
