Sherry and fruitcake

Each Thursday we visit Nan to deliver groceries. Since this is the first visit of the New Year we knew to expect ----- a glass of sherry, shortbread and scrumptious fruitcake.
She does not get out and about now since she is 91 and quite frail. I am her stepson and find no great difficulty in being the "shopping-boy" except when I get it wrong or lose a receipt.
For me it's no great hardship, I'm back in Cowdenbeath where I walk tall, and can look forward to a sherry next year if, as I hope, we are both spared.
---- that last sentiment is a basic Scottish prayer, expressed optimistically rather than with an air of pessimism!
