ND filter, or not?

I thought I would have another go at taking shots of the river using the ND filter. I kept checking the results and was not very happy with any them, even though I was bracketing. Eventually I took the filter off, and shot a few more at slightly faster speeds. So, which do I prefer? Well this one shown here is without the filter, and to my eye the detail in the water is far more interesting than the smooth silky effect that you get with a very slow shutter speed.

But I know that many people wouldn't agree with me!

I have to mention that some shots I have taken of the sea, using the ND filter have been (again to my eye) really lovely. Horses for courses maybe.
