Neglect

I spent the day out and about with Jess. We went to the top of Church Hill and looked out over the city for a bit before heading down and across the river to Ann Carrow's Landing. Prior to the Civil War surplus slaves were sold at auction in Shockoe Bottom (at the base of Church Hill) and then marched to the docks here to be shipped to the larger plantations in the Carolinas and further south. It is believed that this was possibly one of the largest interstate slave transfer locations in the country. Yet, most of the people here in the city don't even realize this. I've never been a huge history buff, but it astounds me how much readily accessible information is available to the apathetic citizens of this city. Sadly enough this phenomenon is likely not merely a local one.
